ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

The Embassy of Peru in Thailand will host the vibrant Peruvian artist Lenin Tamayo, who will mark his Thailand debut over three spectacular cultural presentations.

On Oct 16, Lenin Tamayo debuts at Mahidol University International College in the Screening Room of Aditayathorn Building at 2pm. There will be a panel discussion followed by a concert. On Oct 17 at 6pm, there will be a talk show on “K-Pop As A Global Culture: Based On The Cases Of Q'pop And T-Pop” at the Korean Cultural Center. On Oct 19 at 4pm, Tamayo will perform at Siam Paragon's SCBX Next Tech.

Tamayo, 24, is a Peruvian singer, songwriter and music producer, who has made a significant impact on the music scene with his innovative genre, Q'pop (Quechua Pop). By merging catchy K-pop rhythms with meaningful Quechua lyrics, his music resonates with a diverse audience, celebrating cultural heritage while embracing modern influences.

Through this musical tour, the aim is to highlight the value of Peru's millennia-old cultural richness, which, faithful to Peruvian history, merges with influences from other regions to offer the world a unique product. Q-pop highlights the significance of Quechua, the language spoken by the Incas and still spread across South America.

Adding to the experience, Tamayo uses the choreographed dance moves of a K-pop star to a backing of traditional Andean musical instruments such as pan flutes and rain sticks during his concerts. Born in the captial, Lima, he grew up surrounded by the culture of the Andes, the ancestral home of the Incas and other indigenous groups, largely reflected in his personality.

Each song from his debut album "Amaru", which was released in August last year, is inspired by Incan mythology. The title refers to a mythic double-headed snake. Tamayo's work has garnered international acclaim. He has been recognised as a visionary artist for 2024 by the prestigious Rolling Stone magazine and has been interviewed by major outlets such as BBC and Forbes. His fusion of Andean sounds with contemporary pop places him at the forefront of the global music landscape and serves as a powerful call for cultural reconnection.
