Fishermen and sea / Warin Lab Contemporary / Until Nov 30

Warin Lab will host another thought-provoking exhibition with an environmentally conscious message. Prach Pimarnman has witnessed the impact of capitalist intervention on the local fishing community in his hometown of Narathiwat. For generations, fishermen and their seaborne surroundings have lived in harmony. Historically, they were nomadic until some settled in the area where the Bang Nara River meets the Gulf of Thailand. Their land was vacant and undeveloped, until recently when it was assigned to the Marine Department's jurisdiction, rendering their presence debatable or owned by local magnates, who expanded their holdings by reclaiming more land area into the water. In "From Nomad To Nowhere", Prach captures the tension between the vanishing natural landscape and the vulnerable yet resilient community whose livelihood depends on it. He metaphors the memories of the location, through using materials belonging to the locality, such as pounded bricks, seashells, charcoal and thrown-away fishnets. Prach mirrors the community’s struggle to preserve their way of life, pressured by ever-increasing capitalisation. The exhibition runs until Nov 30.
