From tomorrow until Nov 17, visitors to Sukhothai Historical Park can dress in Thai period costumes and journey back in time to the days when the iconic Loy Krathong and Candle Festival was created to pay homage to the Goddess of Water.
Set in a nostalgic atmosphere, the Dong Tan Market will highlight the charming way of life during the Sukhothai era and visitors can engage in a kra thong contest, beauty pageants, khon mask dance performance, puppet shows, Thai folk dance, and other cultural performances.
Wat Mahathat is a stage for the extravagant light and sound show that recounts the legend of Thao Si Chulalak and shows the majesty of the Sukhothai kingdom, complete with a great war elephant parade, fireworks and ancient Thai-style lanterns.

Celebrate Loy Krathong at Ayutthaya Historical Park
To celebrate the Loy Krathong Festival, Ayutthaya Historical Park is hosting the Ayutthaya Sundown & Night At The Palace from Saturday until Nov 17. As night falls, a variety of Thai cultural performances, talks, workshops, outdoor movies, and other leisure activities will take place on the grounds of Wat Phra Ram, Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Mahathat, Wat Chaiwatthanaram, and Chandra Kasem Palace, which will be transformed into primary entertainment venues, which will be illuminated with lighting displays.
The Office of Performing Arts will present khon mask dance performances and lakhon nok (a traditional Thai-style play performed by all male actors). Chucherd Chamnansilp Puppet Troupe from Samut Songkhram will recount the folklore about Phra Aphai Mani and Wat Khanon Shadow Puppet from Ratchaburi will perform the Ramakien epic. The Chandra Kasem Palace will also feature a traditional Thai tattoo demonstration, fortune telling and a game of human chess.

Bang Baimai community marks Loy Krathong
To maintain waterside village culture, the Bang Baimai Community in Surat Thani is welcoming locals and tourists to the Loy Krathong Festival on Nov 15.
From 6.30pm-10pm, visitors dressed in Thai-style period costumes can release a krathong made of nipa palm leaves and decorated with a candle and flowers into a tiny canal to illuminate a picturesque nipa palm tunnel. There will also be a krathong competition, a river cruise tour, a beauty contest and a local food market to bring back childhood memories.
