Twice the luxury

It’s all about location and art at the Conrad Centennial Singapore

TRAVEL

Does one ever get tired of Singapore? Probably never. Especially with its efficiency, starting at the airport, one is reminded of a stress-free life — of what life should be without the daily nitty-gritty that irks us.

Bang smack in the Marina Bay area offering panoramic views of the Singapore skyline, the Conrad Centennial Singapore is a good place to stay, while being close to relatively everything. The hotel is near iconic landmarks such as Esplanade, Merlion Park, Suntec Convention Center, and the Singapore Flyer, as well as world class art museums and galleries.

Having being built when space wasn’t so much of an issue, the hotel is 31 floors high with modern rooms that are large for the Merlion City, starting at 40m2. Whether you’re in a room or a suite, the huge wide windows offer views of the Bay or the city. However, the best bit of any room or suite you choose is that they all have bathtubs, complete with the signature yellow rubber duck. Such a luxury in Singapore!

The hotel is rich in art, with a 3,400 artwork collection, all original. Everywhere you look, there are bits and bobs of art that depict Singapore’s rich heritage and diversity. Begin in the driveway with “Harmony", a sculpture by American artist Richard Sparling. Don’t miss the “artful welcome” featuring the triptych “Underwater” by Goh Beng Kwan and "Gathering" by Tay Bak Koi. On level two, find “Kites” by Singaporean artist Tan Chin Chin. Trace the stories and creative spirit of Asia with the hotel’s self-guided art tour, featuring 21 carefully curated pieces.

The lobby comprises the five elements of feng shui — water, fire, earth, metal and wood. One’s eyes are immediately drawn to the centre of the lobby with its fiery sculpture representing fire, which is called “Turbulence” by Rafael Barrios. Right above is the water element with a chandelier, which hangs over a beautiful spiral staircase, resembles a water drop or an inverted Christmas tree, depending on the season. And, ’tis the season!

The Centennial King Suite is one of the hotel’s top tier suites and could easily house two with plenty of personal space for each. The modern suite has Asian accents and offers a living area, bedroom and huge bathroom. Lounge on the long daybed by the window in the living room looking at the skyline or in the cozy king-sized bed, overlooking the water. The marble bathroom has a double vanity sink, large bathtub and separate shower stall with a rain shower. The room comes with the Lounge access and it’s the best thing.

The lounge goes a good buffet breakfast, afternoon tea, evening drinks with hors d’oeuvres, and has private rooms, which can be used for two hours a day.  Should you want to pull yourself away from the lounge and its top views, pun intended, go to the Cantonese restaurant Golden Peony, which is accessible via a lift in the lobby or a flight of stairs.

Golden Peony has flourished for more than 28 years and is a hot favourite with the locals, always a good sign. Keeping Cantonese traditions alive while embracing modern inspirations, the restaurant blends tradition with artistry. From dim sum to roasts and seafood, Golden Peony offers the best of Hong Kong-style cuisine.

Executive Chinese chef Ku Keung has spent two decades at the helm of the kitchen and revived long-forgotten recipes for this generation. The restaurant also pays homage to Chinese tea, which is an integral part of the experience. Must-try dishes include the Dry-fried sweet and spicy Szechuan-style shaved beef and the Panko-crusted crab meat on crab shell with mushroom and onion.

Breakfast if had at the all-day dining Oscar’s is a treat! Everything one could possibly eat in the morning is on offer, even if service is a tad wanting. There are Indian, local, Asian and Western, even the famous Kaya toast makes an appearance. For the child in us, there is even ice cream on offer!

The pool, spa and gym are all on one floor so one has access the wellness and relaxation at the same time. The 20m lap pool offers views of the iconic Singapore flyer from day beds or loungers. Probably one of the best things about it is the fact that it is open until 10pm, perfect for the before-bed dip.

The hotel is very popular with families and business people because of its location. But the comfortable and spacious guest rooms more than make up for the busyness.
