Baird's gift
A Poem for HM The Queen Mother's Birthday on Aug 12, 2024.
In a kingdom graced with immeasurable joys
The generosity of your giving
Fills our minds with thanksgiving
Across the kingdom art and artistry flourish
Touched by your generosity
Caressed by artisan effort and zeal
Cultural gifts our minds nourish
As years accumulate from valued days
And time is spent in meaningful ways
Your support we remember with joy
Your praises we employ
Thus on this your birthday we invoke in thanksgiving
Blessings and strength for you, unending
Re: "Triathletes are lab rats for Seine cleanup stunt", (Sport, Aug 1).
Anyone who has played in any competition knows that the taste of victory can also be matched by the pain of injury, but they keep battling on.
Australia's own version of football is facing a crisis from the consequences of concussions in a fierce contact game.
These however have been overshadowed by the potentially deadly game of chess where a Russian champion has been accused of putting mercury, a deadly poison, on her opponent's pieces. Revenge, for an insult, can be sweet but it should never be fatal.
We are all watching the world's best at the Olympics and soon the Paralympics, and the only risks are those inherent in their sport and by swimming in the Seine, not by any act of malice.
The Olympic motto of "Faster, Higher, Stronger" should be extended to include, "Honest, Fairest and Safest". This ideal should be the cornerstone of all competitions, even chess.
Re: "No anthem, no flag as Belarusian wins title", (Sport, Aug 3).
The IOC and indeed the whole Olympic movement should hang their heads in shame for allowing vastly superior female impostors not only to compete against real, physically inferior women, but awarding them with medals, and for not allowing the Russian and Belorussian athletes to compete.
They did not start, nor participated in the Ukrainian war. They are just sportsmen. Thus, the medal table would not be looking like the celebration of the Western wallahs-dominated, IOC-biased, convoluted and idea of fairness. If you allow the Israelis or North Koreans in, also allow the Russian sportsmen to compete. The IOC has robbed the games of some of the best sportsmen and women in the world. It humiliated and denigrated the women who were forced to compete against the Algerian!
I also fully agree with the assertion by the Postbag contributor who suggested, that like in the ancient games, all athletes should be competing naked. That way we could all see what is hidden under their clothes, under the IOC-wokeism and the alphabet-group LGBTQI+ favouritism. Now they can add another two letters to their already long logo: OW, aka Olympic Winner.
I also agree with the Russian complaint to the UN that the Olympic games have been hijacked by a gay Pride parade as demonstrated in the opening ceremony. It should have celebrated sport, not some nebulous inclusivity.
