Our next top cop
Re: "Top cop pick looms large", (Editorial, Sept 18) & "Top cop call likely to spur interference", (BP, Sept 16).
Selecting our next top cop is far too important to be left to any single political party and should be done by the parliamentary committee focusing on internal security.
As the Post reports, "this year's appointment (of our national police chief) will see the most political interference in years". But our police's noble duty is to serve and protect all residents in Thailand regardless of political affiliation. Also, PM Paetongtarn seemingly has assigned our defence minister to do the selection, but his fief is to protect us from external foes, not domestic security, which is an entirely different area.
Our parliamentary committee responsible for domestic justice should set the selection criteria and choose our next police chief. Parliament alone is composed of all major representatives of our people, to whom the police are sworn to serve and protect.
Value for money?
So True has announced yet another discontinuance of an educational/sophisticated channel. How many is that so far, True? Too many is the correct answer.
And, how many viewers have noticed over the years that True has not cut a single cartoon channel from the 400 series of channels? None that I know of. And, to me, it indicates that management is more interested in kiddie entertainment.
And, something else. While True has been busy axing non-cartoon channels, they've not been replacing them. What you do get to see is a programme that is frequently interrupted by a black screen, loss of sound and a message saying poor signal. In fact, True has committed to airing the same programme on 2 to 3 different channels at the same time.
True is airing programmes so old that they qualify for pension payments. Notice at the end of a programe that some go back to 2006? True also advertises for HBO, which they eliminated years ago. Oh, wait. You have to pay more to see that now.
So, the big question is, are True subscribers getting value for their money? Is True going to lower subscription prices to compensate for all of this?
Smears and threats
Re: "Toxic comments", (PostBag, Sept 14).
I was delighted to see two PostBag letters complaining about those who abuse online forums by writing filth about others. Readers may recall that a few months ago, I had a dispute with Khun Songdej Praditsmanont. As gentlemen, we politely settled our differences in the PostBag column space.
But at the time, people posted comments on your PostBag online forum saying I should be jailed or finished off. Ironically, these are the same people who call Donald Trump a fascist. Yet, compared to these barbarians, Trump is an angel! Many moderators are trolls themselves who enjoy the power of smearing and destroying others. Why doesn't your newspaper have the decency to stop these online sociopaths?
No 'tit', no 'tat'
Re: "Toxic comments", (PostBag, Sept 14).
Khun Kuldeep Nagi, your references of "bad-mouthing", "crazy", "deranged" and "belittle" certainly have no place in PostBag letters. It can quickly become a back-and-forth "tit for tat". The obvious solution: If writers wouldn't write "tit", there wouldn't be any "tat".
