Kitchen heats up

Re: "If you are not ready for legal scrutiny", (InQuote, Sept 26).

It was so sweet to the eyes to read of Deputy PM Anutin Charnvirakul criticising those politicians attempting to amend the charter law on ethical standards and other judicial check-and-balances that they don't like and asking them to stay home and leave politics. The 33rd US president, Harry S Truman, put it even more bitingly that "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."

BoT still a mystery

Re: "BoT unpacked", (PostBag, Sept 25).

SS made a useful contribution but unfortunately failed to answer the question, who or what constitutes the juristic person which is the Bank of Thailand? The four governing policy boards are not a juristic person. But a juristic person, a single legally constituted entity, effectively owns the assets of the BoT. We are told the BoT is publicly owned, meaning the citizens of Thailand are equally accorded ownership rights. But exactly how that is so is extremely well concealed from the purported owners.

Furthermore, if the public owns the BoT, presumably, they could command by consent of their vote what course it takes to determine the fate of the nation's economy. Additionally, wouldn't it benefit the public to limit commercial bank interest rates and the BoT rate it charges commercial banks? But as things stand their elected representatives can't do a thing about what the BoT is doing with interest rates, nor can citizens individually. Therefore, it would seem the question posed above is an important one.

Dangers of dogs

Re: "Woman killed by sister's pit bull terrier", (Online, Sept 25).

And yet another senseless death at the jaws of a good-for-nothing -- described by many as another "pet".

In this tragic news, a 67-year-old woman was savaged by and killed by her sister's pitbull dog as she rode her bicycle past the house when the beast was let out of the cage. The owner of the dog admitted she had put the pitbull in the cage most of the time.

So far, three reported deaths this year in Thailand, with thousands more maimed or injured.

Furthermore, around 100 cases of rabies each year, the vast majority attributable to dogs.

When will society wake up to this threat? A dog is an animal, and it cannot be a real man's (or woman's) friend.

Dogs in general, do not have intelligence or emotion that can lead to actual and risk-free loyalty.

If you own a dog, you are dealing with risk, not only your life's safety, but the lives of all around you.

Consider that when you leave your child alone with these animals.

Ethical flexibility

Re: "Pheu Thai 'flexible' on policy", (BP, Sept 25).

The evidence to date being entirely consistent, no one can reasonably doubt that, as the unwanted and unpopular Shinawatra PM herself insists, Pheu Thai is supremely flexible on any issue related to ethics.
