Save Mother Earth
Re: "Toxic smog level get worse in Delhi", (World, Nov 14) & "World leaders in Baku for COP29", (World, Nov 13).
As world leaders, environmentalists and related officials attend the 29th UN Climate Conference in Azerbaijan's Baku, crisis has been rocking the boat across the world. Each country has been confronting climate crises and increasing pressure and huge human activities have just added to the whole issue.
Furthermore, the monsoon pattern in Asia is volatile and unpredictable for some if not all of the time. But most of the time, it is the agricultural activities and farm produce that are being stunted drastically.
After all, climate change, global warming, greenhouse gases and the ozone layer are all interconnected. Great awareness campaigns and proper dissemination of the primary issue have to be spread among the masses and countries.
Green activities, strengthening farming activities and protecting all the trees are all the stepping stones to the future success of this ongoing mission.
Empowered by the River Thamirabarani and other salient features like fertile soil and a good monsoon out there, areas in India like Korkai, Tuticorin, Tiruchendur, Nagercoil, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu have been able to sustain greater green activities, such as farming and other planting activities.
This kind of lifestyle needs to be encouraged now. As a matter of fact, the people in my professional stations, like Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, have now started living in the countryside areas.
These are all positive shifts in the direction of a new green world. Still, the international community should more groundwork, by coming up with appropriate strategies to resolve the climate crisis.
When faced with issues like climate change and the food crisis, people and governments have to take the first initiative. After all it is in the hands of the people around to keep Mother Earth safe through strongly voicing for the green revolution.
BoT brain-twister
Re: "BoT tempers anxiety about chair", (Business, Nov 13).
The chair of the selection committee for a new board chairman of the Bank of Thailand, Sathit Limpongpan, put it bluntly that the chair of the BoT board does not influence the country's monetary policy. That must be the most unbelievable statement of the year. So, he impliedly assures the public that his committee's coming choice of that board's chair needs not to be independent or impartial on the country's monetary oversight, because he does not influence the central bank's monetary policy. Yet, he is chairman of the BoT's board.
Without repeating his argument of form over substance, common sense tells one that the BoT's chair would have some form or another of leading and influencing the BoT's functions in maintaining the stability and prosperity of our country.
His defence of the choice of candidate should have been about the candidate's experience, expertise, and ability to be impartial when called for, not based on past history.
