Central Pattana Plc., Thailand’s leading real estate developer committed to sustainability under the vision of “Imagining Better Futures for All”, is developing Central Krabi as the first fully integrated mixed-use development in the heart of Krabi. The project is designed to enhance Krabi’s potential as a world-class destination while preserving its natural beauty.
As part of its environmental responsibility efforts, Central Pattana is raising awareness of marine waste through a collaboration with Krabi Province, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (Krabi Office), ocean waste management organisation OCYCO, and a local artist. This partnership has resulted in the Eco-Art Hoarding, an artistic installation on the project’s construction fence, made entirely from marine debris. The artwork depicts endangered marine species under threat from ocean waste, reinforcing the importance of environmental conservation and promoting Sustainable & Mindful Tourism.
A Statement for Sustainability
The Eco-Art Hoarding at Central Krabi’s construction site is composed of more than 3,500 pieces of marine plastic waste, collectively weighing over 360 kilograms. Repurposed materials include PET bottles, HDPE, PP, bottle caps, plastic bags, ropes, and fishing nets, transformed into artwork featuring endangered marine species native to Krabi’s waters, such as the Bryde’s whale, whale shark, and leatherback turtle.
To ensure sustainability, no additional paint was used. Each plastic piece was carefully selected to match the natural colours of the marine animals, facilitating future upcycling. The initiative reflects Central Pattana’s commitment to marine conservation, encapsulated in the message: “For a Better Sea, For a Better Life”.
Voices Behind the Initiative
Mr. Angkura Siladhewakul, Governor of Krabi Province, emphasised the significance of eco-friendly tourism, stating: "Krabi is globally recognised as one of the world’s most welcoming destinations, thanks to its natural beauty and warm hospitality. Our priority is to preserve the delicate balance between nature and local culture, promoting sustainable tourism that respects our environment."
Dr. Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, Chief Marketing Officer of Central Pattana, highlighted the company’s dedication to sustainability: "We aim to advocate for mindful travel and sustainability, encouraging both locals and visitors to reduce their environmental impact. The Eco-Art Hoarding is a testament to our commitment—created from over 3,500 recycled plastic pieces, it stands as a powerful statement on our responsibility to protect Krabi’s marine ecosystem."
Ms. Soraya Homchuen, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (Krabi Office), praised the initiative’s role in driving sustainability: "This creative transformation of marine waste into art is an inspiring approach to environmental conservation. However, true progress depends on collaboration across all sectors."
Ms. Tanapakarot Tiawpradit, CEO of OCYCO, underscored the urgency of marine waste management: "Unmanaged ocean plastic degrades into microplastics, harming marine life, ecosystems, and even local communities. Our mission is to reduce marine waste by turning recyclable plastics into upcycled products, fostering a sustainable cycle of environmental care."
Artist Mr. Narong Sanjohn, who designed the Eco-Art Hoarding, expressed his hopes for change: "Even if just 1% of people become more aware and take action, that’s a step in the right direction. Many sea creatures, like turtles and whale sharks, suffer directly from plastic pollution. My wish is for future generations to witness these incredible species in the wild."
A Sustainable Future for Central Krabi
Scheduled for launch in October 2025, the Central Krabi development represents a 4.5 billion THB investment across 114 rai of land. The project aims to reduce its carbon footprint from the construction phase onwards, working towards EDGE Certification. Designed under the concept of “Fully Integrated with Nature”, the semi-outdoor development seamlessly blends with Krabi’s landscape and features a panoramic viewpoint.
